19th ANNUAL NORWALK (CT) SUMMER SERIES

.............fifth of six races............

George Buchanan, Emmy Stocker Return to the Top
Beating All Comers in the Silvermine 11-Miler

Saturday, August 24......after losing in Norwalk's 9-mile race two weeks ago, George Buchanan and Emmy Stocker today used the 11-miler at Silvermine to reassert and lengthen their leads in the six-race Norwalk Summer Series. Buchanan ran most of the way with Henry Goitia, but eased ahead of him at the end with a 1:07:47 to Goitia's 1:08:27. Well back in third place, Mike Rorick closed with 1:11:28.

Stocker's winning time of 1:17:25 placed her far up on the over-all list for the race, in sixth place. Meg Hickey was 2nd woman, in 1:23:28, while Felicia Ingram was third, in 1:25:46.

About 100 runners started the race, on a humid, overcast morning. Midway in the hilly,
two-loop course a sudden rainstorm broke the humidity and the race was completed in
very comfortable conditions. 83 runners ran both loops, for the full 11-mile distance.

The final race of the series will be the Pacesetter Half-Marathon on Saturday, Sept. 21.
That race will start a little later, at 8:30 A.M. and will be staged from Fox Run School,
Fillow and Richards Streets, in Norwalk. A full set of awards for the half-marathon will be presented, followed by the trophies for the over-all Summer Series.
