Summer Sizzler 5K Race #8
Springfield, MA, June 5, 2013
by Mike Lescarbeau, Race Director
Today is National Running Day, and 41 participants made their way to the starting line as the Summer Sizzler Series continued with the 5K cross-country road race. Tonight marked race #8 out of 20 in the schedule. It was a beautiful evening for running with partially cloudy skies and seasonable cool temperatures. The crowd of runners lined up at the start looked noticeably young, and the results proved it as 15 of the runners were in the Youth (0-19) division. There was also an abundance of spectators this evening. GSH President and historian Peter Stasz noted that this may have been the largest group of spectators in the 34 year history of the series. As I type this race report Peter is combing through the archives and film footage to confirm his suspicions.
After a few words of encouragement from the race director the field was sent on their way. Right from the sound of the bell it would be a pair of GSH youth runners, Daniel Krasemann and Bill Carroll, leading the field down Main Greeting Road towards the entrance to the trails. Daniel would go on to win the race, crossing the finish line in 19:12. The win was an age 11 record, shaving 36 seconds off his own record that was set earlier this year. This would be Daniel’s 3rd win of the season and 3rd of his career. Bill would end up in 2nd place with a time of 21:17 followed by Mahib Balde in 21:39. Male age group awards went to Daniel in the Youth division, Bill Sterritt won the Open (20-39) division in 25:23, Volker Krasemann (Daniel’s dad) was top Master (40-49) in 22:40, EORC’s Paul Gallager was top Senior (50-59) with a time of 26:20, and GSH’s Roy Anderson crossed the line in 30:09 and took top Veteran (60-69) honors.
The women’s race belonged to GSH’s Beth Krasemann (Daniel’s mom), completing a family sweep of the awards. Beth crossed the line in 22:02 and earned her 2nd victory of the season and 2nd of her career. This is the second time this year that Beth and Daniel won the same race. Second female belonged to Julia Merton with a time of 23:35 and Nora Garrity grabbed the final podium spot, finishing the race in 23:58. Female age group awards went to Nora in the Youth division, Beth in the Open division, GSH’s Colleen Cummings took top Master in 27:40, EORC’s Annmarie Fitzsimmons was first Master in 28:01 and SS’s Vicki Quagliaroli crossed the finish line in 35:11, capturing top Veteran in the process.
The usual cast of volunteers made the race run smoothly. The group consisted of Brian Goddu, Ed Carroll, Brian McCarthy and Bruce Kurtz. Thanks to all the runners, volunteers and spectators. Hope to see you all next week at the 8K road race.
