CCRR Winter Fun Run 2013
by Bob Burt, Race Director
It’s hard to believe this is our 33rd running of this race and even harder to believe that I’ve been the race director for 25 of those years. It’s been an amazing 25 years. The race has developed a core following each and every year and I want to thank those that continue to return. Our free cotton gloves have become a staple among local runners, many preferring them to more expensive high-tech gloves. The handwritten results board is incredibly labor-intensive, but I’ve actually been asked to continue doing it that way instead of modernizing. The chowder and fritters are always a treat after a race and the beers go down awfully easy, especially at the low prices asked by our friends at the Weary Travelers. We continue to donate all the proceeds to the Bourne Conservation Trust, who continues to buy up land in Bourne in the name of conservation. The Weary Travelers get a portion as well, with their funds going to help the Shriners Hospital.
This year’s race was another good one. We had a new group of younger runners that topped our leader’s board. Some of our usual winners were up there too, but down a few spots from what they’re used to. We love to see new blood infused into the race and are glad to see the results mixed up a bit. The course was a little slow, having seen some flurries earlier that morning. Most of it melted before the gun went off, but not all. Some ice lingered in the corners and in the shadows—remnants from a storm a week prior. As a result, our course records held for another year. Although with a men’s record of 24:37 (Lou Restaino in 1991) and women’s at 26:47 (Lynn Jennings in 1999), it will be a long time before we see them topped.
Congratulations and thank you to all that raced this year. Special thanks go to the clubs that continue to include us on their circuits—we love having you each year and look forward to your continued support. A final thanks go to all those that volunteered, many of them giving up the chance to run in order to help out.
Have a great 2013 season, run hard, and see you in 2014!
