Peoples Forest Run – January 27, 2013

The Hartford Track Club’s winter series has been making its annual trek along the scenic Farmington River through American Legion and Peoples State Forests since the early 1970’s. Some of Connecticut’s finest runners have toured this frigid route, as evidenced by John Vitale’s astounding course record time of 1:32:08 set in 1979. While this year’s temperatures were 10 degrees warmer than last year, 18 degrees and blustery winds did not make for a balmy day. A cheery group of 55 runners braved the elements, led by Tony Bonanno and Tracy Dickey in the one loop event, and Joshua Adams and Julia Zetye in the full 2-loop muscle-cramper. Congratulations to all.

HISTORY OF THE HARTFORD TRACK CLUB RIVERTON/PLEASANT VALLEY TWO-LOOP RUN

Men's record for two loops: John Vitale, 1979, 1:32:08, 5:23 pace.

Women's record for two loops: 1990, Mary-Lynn Pastizzo, 1:50:19, 6:26 pace.

(Mary-Lynn's last name in now Currier.)

The run uses a loop that goes up one side of the Farmington River to Riverton, and down the other to Pleasant Valley. The loop was measured by Bill Tribou on March 11, 1980, at least that's the date on his report. The then-new, HTC measuring wheel he used gave him a distance of 13,787 meters, so two loops would be 17.134 miles.

1978: George Straznitskas, 1:34 (only finisher reported).

1979: John Vitale, 1:32:08 (That's 2:20:59 marathon pace; report said the time was a course record. George Straznitskas, 1:32:19, was second
