Summer Sizzler 8K Race #14

Springfield, MA, July 25, 2012

Summer Sizzler 8K Race #14-Race Report

by Mike Lescarbeau, Race Director

Race Report: Tonight’s race was the 14th of 19 total races for the 2012 Summer Sizzler series. We returned to the 8,000 meter course on a splendid night for running. Temperatures at start time were approximately 80F few clouds and only slight humidity. A photographer from BYOFamily was on-hand to take photographs for an upcoming e-article on the Summer Sizzler race series. Stay tuned for more information, or head over to www.BYOfamily.com and see for yourself what they are all about. After the photo and a few brief words from the race director the field of 32 runners were off.

The field erupted down the opening straightaway towards the rose garden. A large group of runners were jockeying for position as the field made their way around Walker fields and out towards Trafton Road. Due to the large crowd of families enjoying the park it was difficult to tell who was in the lead. After waiting patiently for the field to re-emerge from the shadows of the ice cream shack it would be Scott Besser in the lead. Scott would maintain his position and cross the finish line in 30:54 for his second victory of the season and second career victory. Scott was also the top Youth (0-19) finisher. Second place, and top Master (40-49) honors, belonged to Sean LePouttre in 32:21 followed closely by 3rd place finisher Matthew Bernard in 32:37. Top male Open (20-39) in 32:40 was Dan Manuzzi, top Senior (50-59) was GSH’s Richard Clark in 34:10 and round out the age group winners was top Veteran (60-69) was GSH’s Roy Anderson in 46:13.

The women’s race belonged to Jenny Richard. Jenny completed the course in 35:06 to earn her first victory of the season and 2nd of her Summer Sizzler career. Jenny also grabbed top Open female. GSH’s Kathy McCarthy placed second female and top Senior with a time of 36:31 and third female, and top Youth, belonged to Lindsey Bernard in 37:51.

Volunteers for the race were Brian Goddu, Bruce Kurtz, Brian McCarthy, Mike Lescarbeau and special guests Gabby Lescarbeau and Megan Peters. Thanks to all the runners and volunteers making this race possible. Next week the clock flips to August 1st and the race flips to the 5K XC course.
