Summer Sizzler 8K Race #12

Springfield, MA, July 11, 2012

Summer Sizzler 8K-2012-07-11-Race Report

by Mike Lescarbeau, Race Director

Race Report:

After taking off a week to celebrate the birth of our nation the Summer Sizzler series returned to Forest Park for race # 12, an 8,000 meter run through the park and surrounding communities. Sunshine greeted the field with start time temperatures hovering around 80F with a low dewpoint and slight breeze. Once the runners were posted up, the race director gave final instructions and the opening bell was rung.

Charging down the narrow, car-lined opening strightaway towards the rose garden was GSH’s Dan McNair followed closely by Scott Besser and Freddy Rivera and Dan Manuzzi. The women’s field was led by Maureen Burns and GSH’s Julie Carroll.

It was Dan and Scott side-by-side as the exited the park onto Trafton Road. After battling for the opening 2.5 miles it would be Scott Besser pulling away and running to his first Summer Sizzler victory in 32:07. With the win his name will forever be etched into the Summer Sizzler Hall of Fame. Freddy Rivera placed second in 32:44 followed by Open Division (20-39) winner Dan Manuzzi in 33:09. Age group awards went to Scott Besser in the Youth Division (0-19), top Master (40-49) with a time of 35:24 was SS’s Dominic Wilson, GSH’s Richard Clark grabbed top Senior (50-59) with a time of 34:18 and GSH’s Roy Anderson was first in the Veteran Division (60-69) in 44:07.

In the women’s field it would be Maureen Burns sprinting wire-to-wire for the victory, and top Senior, with a time of 34:59. Maureen is also a first time winner and will find her name etched in the Summer Sizzler Hall of Fame alongside Scott Besser. GSH’s Julie Carroll finished in 35:36, good for second female and top Youth. Rounding out the women’s podium in 37:25 was GSH’s Kathy McCarthy. Top Open female honors belonged to Julie Kadamus with a time of 38:46.

Volunteers for the race were Brian Goddu, Bruce Kurtz, Ed Carroll, Brian McCarthy and Mike Lescarbeau. Thanks to all the runners and volunteers making this race possible. Our race series will return to the 5K XC course next Wednesday, July 18th.
