Summer Sizzler 8K Race #18

Springfield, MA, August 22, 2012

Summer Sizzler 8K Race Report-2012-08-22

by Mike Lescarbeau, Race Director

Race Report: Tonight’s 8,000 meter race marked the 18th race of the Summer Sizzler series. A season-high 45 runners showed up to pay homage to the final 8K race of the season. Running conditions were perfect with partly cloudy skies, temperature around 80F and relatively low humidity. After some words from the race director and GSH president Pete Stasz, Ed Carroll clanged the opening bell and the field was off.

GSH’s Brian Nelson led the large field down the opening stretch and into the rose garden, and quickly opened up a gap that would be too much for the field to handle. Brian went on to lead the race wire-to-wire, finishing in a season best 26:49 to take the win and first place in the men’s Open (20-39) division. It would be Brian’s 1st Sizzler victory of the season and 6th of his career, moving him into a tie for 18th place on the all-time Hall of Fame list. Second place overall, and top youth (0-19) belonged to Freddy Rivera with a time of 29:52. Earning the third and final podium position was Eric Wyzga in 30:22. Age group winners were GSH’s Elvin Torres, taking the Master (40-49) division with a time of 34:16, Rick Lunsford was top Senior (50-59) in 33:48, GSH’s Steve O’Neill’s 36:12 was tops in the Veteran’s (60-69) division and GSH’s Dick Osgood finished in 53:33, tops in the over 70 division.

GSH’s Julia Merton started up a win streak, winning the female division and top Open female with a time of 35:17. This was Julia’s second consecutive win and 7th of her career, moving her into a tie with Mary Hernandez for 16th place on the all time Hall of Fame list. Laura Nelson was the second female to cross the line in 36:58 and Kineysha Rivera’s 37:02 for good for 3rd overall female and first Youth finisher. Age group winners were Karen Tallman, first Master in 44:30, GSH’s Kathy McCarthy’s 38:14 was top good for first Senior, and GSH’s Elaine Dill won the Veteran’s division in 44:38. Elaine’s time was an Age 64 record, cutting 70 seconds of the previous record held by Mary Ryczek. Great job Elaine!

Freddy Rivera was the time prediction winner, finishing just 8 seconds off his prediction.

Volunteers for the race were Brian “Ironman” Goddu, Bruce Kurtz, Brian McCarthy and Ed Carroll and Mike Lescarbeau. Ironman was so efficient in his volunteer duties he was also able to run the race. Thanks to the large group of runners and volunteers for making this race possible.

Next week is the 19th and final race of the season, the fabled 5K XC course. Immediately following the race there will be pizza and soda for all at the Red Rose Restaurant in downtown Springfield, courtesy of the Greater Springfield Harriers.
