Summer Sizzler 5K XC Race #17

Springfield, MA, August 15, 2012

Summer Sizzler 5K XC Race Report-2012-08-15

by Mike Lescarbeau, Race Director

Race Report:

Threatening skies greeted the 32 runners for tonight’s Summer Sizzler 5K XC race, the 17th race of the season. Dark clouds to the north and rumbles of thunder in the vicinity were not enough to deter this determined crowd. After very brief words from the race director the “Ironman” rung the opening bell and the field was off.

Once the field was out of view the crew of volunteers moved over to the finishing area to set up the chute and make sure the primary and backup timers were synchronized. Not long after we heard the cheers from the crowd as the first runners were spotted at the bottom of the finishing hill. It would be Freddy Rivera breaking the tape in 19:48 for his second win of the season and his career. Freddy also grabbed top Youth Division (0-19) honors. Second and third overall went to Scott Besser and Ian Fullerton respectively. Both runners broke the tape in 20:51. Age groups winners wereJoe Armstrong in the Open Division (2-39) with a time of 24:26, Tom Lehouillier’s 24:42 earned him first Master (40-49), GSH’s Doug Cummings was first Senior (50-59) and GSH’s Seth Roberts was first Veteran (60-69) with a time of 24:58.

Julia Merton returned to the Summer Sizzler and gained her 6th career win, finishing 5th overall in 23:14. Julia’s 1st win of this season also gained her first in the female Open division. Second female, and top Youth, was GSH’s Julie Carroll, finishing right behind Julia in 23:18. Third place in the female division was Hannah Gardocki in 23:26. Rounding out the female age groups were top Master Holly Labarre in 25:39 and GSH’s Kathy McCarthy was first Senior in 25:02.

Johan “rainman” Amaro again won the time prediction award, finishing just 1 second off his predicted finishing time.

Volunteers for the race were Brian Goddu, Ed Carroll, Bruce Kurtz and Brian McCarthy. Thanks to all the runners and volunteers for showing up in uncertain weather conditions. I hope see everyone next week for race #18 in the series, the 8K road race. There are now only two races remaining!
