Groton Town Forest Trail Races
W. Grtoon, MA, October 23, 2011
Race Report
by Paul Funch, RD
For this year's races, the weather was cool, in the mid-50s, and overcast - nice running weather! The Nashua River was within a foot of the trail in places due to all the rain of late, but the course itself was dry with only one stream crossing. The course record was set for the second time in two years, but only two age group records were broken during this 14th annual event.
In the 9.5 mile race, Steve O'Brien, 23, of Groton, MA, beat his own course record (and the 20-29 age group record) of 57:40, set last year, with a time of 57:26. The first female was Mary Smith, 29, of Norwood, MA, in a time of 1:15:21. In the 70-79 men's age group, Vic LaPort, 71, of Clarksburg, MA, lowered the record to 1:33:41.
In the 3.4 mile race, John Wiesner of Groton, MA won in a time of 22:18. Kerri Strauss, 37, of Groton, MA was the first female across the finish line in a time of 27:30.
