Race #1 of the 2010 Granite State Snowshoe Series was held on schedule despite a lingering weekend long
storm that dumped snow the night before and throughout race morning. While a few cautious souls stayed
home, 90 hale and hearty snowshoers converged on Beaver Brook in Hollis, New Hampshire to challenge the
elements and fellow competitors. This makes the race the 2nd largest in New Hampshire --- but given the
explosive growth of snowshoe racing in New Hampshire and Eastern Massachusetts, that won't hold for long.
As expected, last year's GSSS Champion Jim Johnson of the CMS Polar Bears ran away from the field for a
convincing 15:48 - 16:24 win over acidotic RACING's Tim Cox. Robert Jackman of the Tuesday Night Turtles
drove up from Rhode Island to take 3rd in 16:43.
acidotic RACING's Amber Cullen-Ferreira bested soon-to-be teammate Ann Rasmussen 20:06 - 20:41 to top
the women's field with Jessey Campbell taking 3rd.
Despite the weather, snowshoers traveled from far and wide to speed along the 4.5K course - with runners
from Virginia, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire in the field. Notably
absent were the regulars who usually travel down from Maine to challenge New Hampshire's best.
All snowshoers were treated to a post race chili fest with 30 pounds of the hot and delicious staple
waiting for them at the finish line. Every drop was devoured - except for 4 scant teaspoons worth that
the Race Director's wife shared with him after the award ceremony. Top snowshoers went home with Beaver
Brook Pint Glasses (Soda Mugs for winners under 21 {grin} ) and more than 25 prizes were raffled off in-
cluding Ambler Winter Caps, White Mountain Granola, RoadID Kits, Loco Sports Gift Certificates, Jack's
Ice Cream Shop Gift Certificates, 3CRP Hanteens, Far Gone Greeting Cards for Runners, and FuelBelts.
Next up on the snowshoe racing scene for NH and Eastern Mass is the Old Salems Green 5K in Salem, Massa-
chusetts on 1/9 and the Feel Good Farm 8K in Lyndeborough, NH on 1/16. Old Salems Greene should be another
fast course, but beware Feel Good Farm's 4 trips up and over Moose Mountain!!!
Nighttime snowshoe training runs are also on the calendar at Horse Hill Nature Preserve in Merrimack, NH on
