Mother Nature conspired against New England snowshoers by throwing a mini-heat wave at us over the 48
hours leading up to the Feel Good Farm Snowshoe Race. While the course was still in beautiful snowshoe
shape Wednesday afternoon, by race time on Saturday there were morethan a few bare spots. Throw in 104
snowshoers covering the same loop twice and by the middle of the race the course was trecherous - to
snowshoes that is. 3C Race Productions regrets the half dozen or so broken snowshoes, but hopes that
all were made by our sponsor Dion Snowshoes - as their modular design means replacing only a broken cleat
instead of a whole pair of snowshoes.
Despite the sparse conditions, the hearty snowshoers thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of 4 trips up and
down Moose Mountain over the course of 2 laps. The Race Director was called 'Sadist', 'Evil', and a few
unprintable epithets as runners passed through the halfway point before heading out for 2 more trips up.
In the end, Mountain Runner Extraordinaire Kevin Tilton of the CMS Polar Bears ran away from acidotic
RACING's Geoff Cunningham for a 37:19 - 37:46 win. CMS teammate Ben Nephew pulled in at 38:40 for third.
acidotic's Amber Cullen and Ann Rasmussen led the ladies with times of 46:39 and 48:01 respectively, with
Lisa Ransom taking the bronze in 52:49.
The team competition was dominated by the CMS Polar Bears who took 1sr, 3rd, and 6th; and acidotic RACING
who used speed and depth to take the team title by placing 5 of the top 10, and 12 of the top 20.
Post race activities centered around the soup pot of freshly made Portuguese Kale Soup. More than 6 gallons
were consumed by the hungry snowshoers along with 72 cornbread muffins. At least 3 snowshoers have already
asked for the recipe, but nobody has ponied up the $1,000,000 asking price. (Thanks Roland!!!) Should we
repeat the Kale Soup at Horse Hill or try a different soup???
Next up is the Pooh Hill Snowshoe Scramble at King Pine Ski Resort in East Madison, NH on 1/23/10.
