The 19th running of
the Colchester Half Marathon took place Saturday February 27th
under mostly cloudy skies, with occasional sun, and temperatures
between 32° and 38°F. The snow of the previous days coated
the trees and landscape making for a picturesque winter wonderland
run, and slower times for everyone. Despite the soggy wet snowy
conditions and the notorious hilly course, a total of 23 runners
completed the course averaging less than seven minutes per mile!
Twenty-four year old David
McKay of Rocky Hill won the race in 1:19:12 averaging a 6.03 mile
pace!
Capturing first place for the women, for the second
straight year, seventeenth overall, was forty-two year young Maureen
Terwillinger of Guilford, Connecticut in a time of 1:28.58, an
awesome 6.48 pace.
Three hundred seventy-one participants completed the
course for a record size field. There were runners from six states
other than Connecticut - Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire,
Maine, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
We had a colorful field led by
56 year old Joe Balavender from Salem who completed his 19th
Colchester Half Marathon making him the only runner to have run every
one.
Another familiar face at this race, American Men’s
course record holder Todd Brown, recently back to running after being
ill, breezed through the course at a 7.10 pace, likely slow by his
standards.
Christie Lee morning radio personality from WTIC 96.5
and Mark Dixon, meteorologist from channel 3 television and celebrity
chair person for the 2010 Fight for Air Climb up Hartford 21,
completed the course together.
Sixty-two year old Hartford cardiologist Paul
Thompson won the men’s veteran division - talk about leading by
example!
There were at least six young women from Miss
Porter’s School in Farmington and a record field of
under-20-year-olds.
Dan Fields, 16 of Lebanon CT running a 1:26.53, a
6.38 pace, won the men’s 13 – 19 division by edging out
Alex Papanastassiou of Stow, MA who ran 1:27.10, 6.40 pace.
The Colchester Half Marathon has become know for it
tough, resilient, good humored participants and for its enthusiastic,
totally awesome volunteers. Think running 13 hilly miles in cold damp
weather is tough, how about those volunteers cheering from a remote
corner on the course or handing out water and Gatorade for three
hours. We all want to thank our volunteers and they are:
