Snowshoe racing in New Hampshire continues its rapid growth as the Beaver Brook 5K Snowshoe Race
attracted 52 entrants`despite being announced publicly less than 2 weeks ago. A large and enthusiastic
crowd toed the line for a 150 yard dash across a near-virgin snowfield before heading down (and I mean
down) Cow Lane and Beaver Brook Trail. Of course, what goes down, must come up, as the race finished with
a half mile climb back to race heqadquarters.
Rob Smith came on strong in the second half of the race to take the title in a blazing 19:05, with
Christopher Smith and Benjamin Keefe close behind. Kara Hass ran away from the rest of the ladies to
set the course record with a sub -20!!! (19:43) to take 5th place overall.
The New Hampshire snowshoe season continues over the next few weeks with the Feel Good Farm 7K on the 24th,
quickly followed by race #2 in the Granite State Snowshoe Series, the Cobble Mountain Classic on the 31st.
Also look on Cool Running and the 3CRP website for an announcement of 1 or 2 more snowshoe races to fill
out the 2009 snowshoe racing season --- including a Snow Sprint.
