Open Letter to the Runners

January 10th, 2009 CONGRATULATIONS RUNNERS and WALKERS of the first annual “SET THE PACE 5K”; you have all set your P.R. for 2009! Congratulations to our “fastest male and female runners in Maine in 2009”; Erik McCarthy of Orono with a time of 17:29 and Lucy Carr of Antilles, France (family in Camden, Maine) with a time of 20:03 (with Amanda Labelle of Rockland right on her heels!). We had 103 registered runners and 6 “opt-out” runners for a total of 109 great folks who supported the Little Field Home on this cold -10 degree wind-chilled morning. Well, here is a small post-mortem of the day’s events: Here’s what Sub-5 timing had to say about the timing of our race; the cold weather brought us some unexpected results, next race we will have a back-up timing system in place: Hi Reade - I was not able to recover the timing data from the Cronomix. Something critical happened after finisher #18 - I reread the instructions and the watch does not functions properly or stops operating when not in normal temperatures (5C - 35C). My deepest apologies! It appears the race was a huge success! The order is correct. Ryan King President Sub5 Track Club So, with that said, we did study the film of the race shot by David Colby Young and his wife (http://mainerunningphotos.com/2009/01/page/2/); this allowed us to get accurate times for over half of our runners. I have sent you all the “official timing” as it stands now. Before making it final, I am asking all runners to check it over, see if there is anything you can add. If you had your own watch going, please let me know what your time was and we will fill it in before making this final and resubmitting it to the papers and to the Maine running sites and Cool Running. We have finish information for all runners with the exception of Joe Destefano, Caleb Philbrook, and Julianne Burgess; we would like to put you into the finish results if someone is able to tell us where you came in or if you ran and finished the race. The final cut-off for this will be January 31st. This awards ceremony was thrown off and things were a little hectic and dysfunctional but we at least had the warm room and some hot potatoes for all the participants. I’ve also sent out a survey for you to fill out and send back with your comments; it was our first time as race directors and we learned so much ‘on the job’ but would like to hear from you with your thoughts. Our plan is to continue this race series with a 5K in March to support the St. Patrick’s Day holiday with our “Leprecon 5K”; originally we thought about February 14th and a “Lovers 5K” but it is too close to our Death Valley Marathon and Team Little Field needs to concentrate on getting ready for the race and doing some personal fundraising. P.S.S. Our megabucks ‘win’ was only $1 which was put towards the orphanage; thanks again for all you did to make this a good day for the children of Littlefield Home and a good for our mid-coast Maine community.
