Let me start with this weeks happy birthday.
Seems a week doesn't pass where we can't find a reason to eat cake. This one was
a double whammy. Ken Deary celebrated his 57th and on the very same day went
into retirement (also known as the first step toward becoming worm food). I'll
be damned if the old fella couldn't have used a shot of oxygen at the finish
line but he did manage to survive long enough to have some chocolate
cake with the rest of the gang. It was pointed out however that said cake
appeared to have spent some quality time in a sundrenched automobile. Anyway,
happy birthday Ken and enjoy your retirement! I'm sure the pigeons in Elm park
will be well fed now.
Don't forget to head out to Holden
Sunday evening for the 46th running of the Fred S Warren 5.5 mile Road Race
Spectacular. That's right folks, 5 and a half miles of rolling hills.
Bull****! It's five and a half miles of hills, no rolling, just hills. Steep,
lung burning, ass busting hills. If this sounds good to you, and why
wouldn't it, be across the street from Friendly's at 6 pm to register and
be ready to run at 6:30. Just be aware there will be border patrol agents at the
Worcester line to be sure to stop any unsavory types from slipping into town.
You've been warned.
Breaking news.....Tragedy narrowly
averted at Kelley Sq Pub.... Seems there are pitfalls to "potluck" type
post race festivities. One being food provided by people who's living conditions
are merely a step above that of a stray feline who's digs are a dumpster beside
route 290. Another being nobody feels like cooking on a particular Monday
night. The latter happened this week. Just as the rationing of the one bag
of barbecue potato chips on hand was about to begin Ken Hutton of the
Highland City Striders jumped into action. Ole' Kenny marched right into Kelley
Sq Pizza and demanded our runners be fed. And fed we were and by golly just
in time. Nothing worse than a bunch of sweaty runners, except of course for
sweaty, hungry runners. Now I don't like to just throw around terms like "hero",
oh no. But I can't think of another term befitting of Ken, and the Highland City
Striders tonight. We salute you!
Of course the real problem this week was
more likely the fact that neither Cyndy, Sue, Tracy, nor Heather were available
to take care of us leaving us to fend for ourselves. You might say we're what
the French call "Les Incompetent".
As it turns out the pizza may have been
an underhanded ploy to indebt us the the HCS running club. It seems our
pals are producing the "First Annual Running With Wolves 10K Road Race Under a
Full Moon" (yeah that should fit on a t-shirt) in a couple of weeks. I
guess as a gesture of gratitude a bunch of us, and you reading this, could head
over to Marlborough Massachusetts on Wednesday August 5th for a 6:00 pm start.
Post race party is at the Prospector East Saloon on Lincoln St in
Marlborough. Whether or not the race itself will be fun I can't say
but I can guarantee the post race time will be kick ass. The HCSers are a
friendly bunch and they KNOW how to have a good time. I've seen it with my own
eyes. I haven't slept since.

Finally, I'd like to leave you with a
few words of wisdom spoken tonight by a Kelley Sq Homeless
Drunkard

Amen to that my brother... Amen to
that.

PS- Cyndy, Sue, Heather and Tracy,
please don't leave us home alone again!
