Soaring Wings and Flying FeetLew Beach, NY -- Sunday, October 12, 2008 - With eagles soaring overhead, runners from as far away as the Netherlands took off Sunday morning during the Beaverkill Mountain Road Race. Starting and finishing at the Beaverkill Valley Inn in Lew Beach, this year's annual event included 128 runners competing in the 1/2 marathon, 5k and kids races. Painted pumpkins marked the miles and moderate temperatures and peak fall foliage made the day memorable for runners aged 3 to "aged" as one lady put on her application. The half marathon winner was Tim Decker of New York City who completed the race in a time of 1:30:24. Right behind Decker, came Gerald Mulder. The third male runner was Henry Catry. India Baird took the honor of first female in a time of 1:45:00. Linda Barnett and Guthrie Schweitzer were 2nd and 3rd respectively. Mulder, a resident of the Netherlands who was in NJ on business last week said, "wherever I am traveling I look online for a local marathon or 1/2 marathon which is how I found the race- it was just wonderful." The race features a challenging hilly course up and over Shin Creek Road and is considered one of the tougher half marathons in the area. Each year, the race committee selects a beneficiary, and this year's event jointly benefited Catskill Mountainkeeper and the volunteer Beaverkill Valley Fire Department who provided support on the race route by setting up and manning water stations as well as offering radio support. The Livingston Manor volunteer ambulance corps was also on hand for medical support. Race finishers were rewarded with medals made of pottery and leather, designed by Livingston Manor student, Jon Hadden. About 200 people gathered at the event to run, volunteer, spectate and peruse the mini fair, which included booths from Catskill Mountainkeeper, CAS Arts Center, Architecture 2030, Livingston Manor and Roscoe Chambers of Commerce as well as several local vendors.
