Seekonk Lions Club and the G.E.N. Fund
Tenth Annual 5K GEN Run
On Sunday, April 27, 2008, the tenth annual Seekonk Lions G.E.N. 5K Run and Two Mile Walkathon was held. In addition to the Race and Walkathon, a 'Homerun Derby', Softball game and race event for young children, the Junior G.E.N., were held following the race, raffle and awards.
Runners are categorized as Youth (12-19), Open (20-39) and Masters (40 and over). Additionally, runners are grouped as Male and Female. Each of these six categories were awarded three prizes: first, second and third place. Youth prizes are non-monetary whereas the other four categories are $150, $100 and $75 for first, second and third places respectively. That's a total of $1300 in cash prizes awarded.
Each registered runner and walker received a tee shirt commemorating the event and a ticket for the chance to win one of the many raffle prizes.
The Lions Club Eyemobile provided screening for blood pressure, hearing and vision at no charge between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm.
Proceeds from this event will benefit four scholarships: one each in memory of Greg Deverell, Eric Azevedo, and Nick Velardo, and one for the Seekonk Lions. This scholarship fund is perpetual and receives its funding through the road race, walkathon, homerun derby and softball game. This is the largest, single fundraiser that benefits scholarships at Seekonk High School.
