How many races have you
run that feature interruptions from a high speed pursuit? Well our 26
runners can count at least one now. A sweet Cadillac tailed by two
dozen Worcester, Shrewsbury, and The Mass State police's finest
criss-crossed the Kelley Sq neighborhood tonight resulting in more than the
usual excitement you get at a weekly road race. As far as I know only one runner
was almost picked off by a shortcut seeking, sidewalk driving Statie.
Now people are saying that the driver of the Caddie in
question may actually have been our Honorable Governor. It's no secret
that he has a penchant for fine automobiles. There is also
speculation that riding shotgun was none other than Worcester's former Mayor and
our current Lieutenant Governor, Tim Murray. Perhaps Tim was showing the
boss around some of the old haunts that dot the Canal District. They certainly
covered a lot of ground in a short period of time and I think there were
even shouts of "City Square...City Square...you'll see Konnie, you'll
see" wailing from the car as they tooled around the
rotary at Washington Sq. Look I'm not saying it was them but I'm
not saying it wasn't either. Whatever the case, the driving chops these
guys displayed make Thelma and Louise look like a couple of tricycle riding
schoolgirls.
If this is more fun
than you think you can handle check out the opposite of excitement in the
form of Rutland, Massachusetts. That's right it is the annual Rutland 4th
of July celebration. It's that time of year again when the cows are herded
back to the barn and the hay is swept of the streets of Rutland only
to be replaced by sweaty runners. This Sunday evening the 26th
Annual Dr. Rockwood Thayer Rutland Road Race takes place at 5:30 pm in
the Center of town. It does not get any more New Englandy than this 3.8
mile small town tradition in the geographic center of the
Commonwealth. Not much more to say other than Jack Goolsky will be
there.......what more do you want? Mix up a batch of Country Time Lemonade
and go out and support the local running community and if you run, make sure
you keep a little in the tank for the big hill at the end.
