Kelley Sq the next Davis
Sq?? The jury is still out on that but if I were betting real dollars on
the next Davis Sq I would look just a couple of miles east of Davis to Union Sq
in Somerville. Being a Somerville native that lived through the
transformation of Davis Sq , and spending a little time this weekend in the
city, it is pretty evident to me that Union Sq is deep into it's
reincarnation and up next for a big time boom. With a major road
reconstruction project in the works and the MBTA planning to extend the
greenline to the Sq giving it a direct public transportation connection
with Boston, good times are ahead much like when the Redline was extended to
Davis Sq in the early eighties. Rather than resist the change the people
there have embraced it as evidenced by the United Nationsy feel of the Sq. Newer
businesses of many ethnic backgrounds coexist with longtime merchants to
give the area a unique collection of stores and restaurants.
What does all that have to
do with Worcester? I don't know if it has anything to do with it, just
making an observation. But having lived through the days of "Slummerville"
and "Scumerville" and all kinds of other slurs and put downs, I guess if it can
happen there it can happen anywhere. Perhaps good things are coming for the
"City on The Move". Gentrification is not necessarily a bad thing
despite the musings of some city pols.
Happy
"cakeless" birthday to Patricia McKeon. Everybody sang to Patti
tonight but if there was a cake I didn't see it and believe me I am
always on the lookout for cake, much like a four year old. Maybe the best
way to put it is a night with no Tracy Flynn is a night with no cake. Not a
total loss however as Sherri St Pierre, like Tracy a Shrewsbury resident,
brought along some cupcakes baked by her kids. So maybe every single one of
'em was a different size and shape but that didn't make then taste bad.
Thanks St Pierre kids!
This Saturday is the first
annual "Worcester Pub
Run" put together by Monday regular and really tall guy, Kevin
Hardiman. If you like beer and you like running why not combine the two on
a summer Saturday afternoon.
Nice group of Highland City
Striders came out tonight and everyone of them and the rest of us were on the
receiving end of a spanking laid down by Sarah Joyce. With no dog and no
husband to hold her back this week, Sarah went out to win and did just
that. Nice job Sarah.
Next Monday is "Make your
own Sundae" night courtesy of the Curley's and An Cu Liath.
Run a little eat a
lot. That's what we do. SS
