Sometimes running backwards can be
faster than running forward

People travel near and far to run in the Good Times Series. Tonight we had representatives from three states (MA, NH and IA) and three countries (United States, United Kingdom and Australia). Mark Blaisdell of Wilmington probably explained the Good Times appeal best by pointing out "This race is faster than most other [weekend] 5-Ks."

Yes sir, it certainly is fast, but it's also a lot of fun. What better way to test your fitness then over a well organized fast course through Lowell's beautiful National Historic Park? This week we had eight runners break 17-minutes and one-tenth of the field broke the 19-minute barrier. Once again it was Benjamin Ndaya (15:16) and Linda Quimby (20:49) placing first as both runners remained atop the Good Times leader board.

Since this was our Reverse the Course week we ran the inner loop of the course in the reverse direction. So as you can imagine, it was just minutes after the run when the debate began over which way was faster. Here are the facts. Last week, running in the regular direction, we had 32 PRs set by 133 runners. This week, running in the reverse direction, we had 38 PRs set by 133 runners.

The facts would seemingly indicate that the reverse direction is the fastest. However I think that faster runners competed this week and the direction had nothing to do with it. Hey, it's 3.1-miles with zero elevation gain regardless of which direction you run. We'll just have to wait until next week to gather more data on this one.

By the way, next week is our Temptation 5K. Please don't miss this race because there is nothing else like it anywhere. It is a one-of-a-kind event. I guarantee you will have a blast whether this is your first time running our course or your twenty-first time.

Here is how it works. At the first water stop there will be 10 boxes and each box will contain a prize, however only one box will contain the Grand Prix. You have to make the decision whether you want to risk having to carry a box that weighs 4 to 6 pounds for two miles in order to have a chance at winning the Grand Prix.

At about 2-miles, we will have a course detour of about 50-meters down a slight hill to the river. When you reach the river's edge, there will be someone holding 25 envelopes. One of the envelopes will contain $100 while the other 24 will contain nothing. You must decide whether you want to risk losing 20 to 30 second off your time by taking the detour and for the opportunity to win $100 or continue straight. Ahhh, the temptation!

So bring all your running friends, family members, neighbors and co-workers for the most fun you'll have running this year for the Temptation 5K. And, as always, we can't promise you will run a fast time, but we guarantee you will have a Good Time!
