RESULTS: XTERRA X-Country 8k Trail Run
Palatine, Illinois
In the early hours of Saturday June 2, the rain came down with a passion; creating a wonderfully muddy and fun course for the first ever XTERRA X-Country Trail Running Race.
This event is the first of three trail running races in the XTERRA Chicago Series and sits under the umbrella of the XTERRA National Championship Trail Running Circuit, which includes nearly 40 events across the country.
In a field of 75, the winners were a diverse crowd, with the top five runners being from four different states. Steve Baugh (39) from Sylvania, OH was an impressive force with the lead from start to finish. He took the top honors, finishing the 8k in just under 30 minutes.
Efrain Avila (22) of Lake Geneva, WI followed suit, finishing with a time of 30:55 and Alex Doeta (22) of Milwaukee, WI took home the bronze in 31:24.
For the women, the speediest three were all Illinois residents. Jessica Scully (23) of Wilmette flew in front of the others, finishing as the first female and 17th overall in a time of 36:37.
Tammy Davis (35) of Naperville was behind her 39:23 and Diana Schnell (48) of Libertyville ended her 8k in a time of 43:23
The clouds parted just before the 8:00 am race began, creating a natural sauna for the runners. However, the 85-degree heat and humidity did nothing to hamper the spirits of the competitors. At the finish grounds a smiling runner commented, "it was so damn hot out, but that was so much fun!" It made the day totally worth it!"
As with all XTERRA events, Mother Nature often proves to be the toughest competitor - tripping runners on her roots, making them sweat under her canopy and slip on her floor.
