Second Annual Disney’s Minnie Marathon Weekend Draws Roughly 4,000 Athletes Nearly Doubling Last Year’s Total
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (May 6, 2007) – Julia Stamps (Miami, Fla.) won the Disney’s Women Run the World 15K on Sunday during Disney’s Minnie Marathon Weekend at the Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Fla. Stamps was hardly challenged during the 9.3 mile course as she posted a time of 58:15 to win the race by over four minutes. Kelley Lowe-Colenbaugh (Kennesaw, Ga.) crossed the line in second with a time of 1:02:46 and Rachel Cook (Athens, Ga.) finished third at 1:04:32.
In the Master’s division, Sue Bagley (Kissimmee, Fla.) won in a time of 1:09:14 followed by Deborah Elsasser (Henderson, Nev.) at 1:09:46. In the Go Red for Women 5k on Saturday, Molly Miller of Celebration, Fla. won easily at 21:02 defeating the nearest competitor by over 40 seconds.
While the weekend is designed for women, men were welcome to participate on behalf of the women in their lives. Ken Banks of Orange Park, Fla. was the top male finisher for in the 15K with a time of 1:05:00, while Jeff Matthews (Davenport, Fla.) took top honors in the Go Red for Women 5K crossing the line in 17:41.
Roughly 4,000 athletes participated in the various races during the Second Annual Minnie Marathon Weekend nearly doubling last year’s number.
