Here's a note from Tom Buckley, the race director:
"On a crisp Autumn day, 93 hardy harriers took to the woods of the West Hartford
Reservoir complex to tackle the 8K terrain of the HTC’s Cross Country Challenge.
The registered field of 100 runners was a record turnout by over 20%! This race is
the final leg of the USATF Grand Prix cross country series. This year the course
was free of any downed limbs or stream crossings, so it was only the sneaky rocks
hiding under the leaves that posed any issues for shaky ankles. Master’s runner
Oscar Barreto broke away from a 3-man pack after the 2 mile mark to win in 28:09,
setting a new master’s course record. In the process, he lead his Athlete’s
Foot/HiTek Open Men’s team to victory. Bet Krasemann of Suffield also had no
trouble with the undulating course and was the top women’s finisher in 32:55.
"This year’s winners were again treated to the culinary delights of our HTC
Secretary Kelly Burns, who graciously filled in last year as race director while
this director was on a sojourn to SE Asia. Kelly’s pumpkin pies and other
delectable treats were enjoyed by all, as were her special HTC insignia socks given
to the age-group winners.
"Special thanks to the always wonderful volunteers that make this a fun and
successful event every year. Helpers included Kelly and her Mom, Abby Doolittle,
Anola Phothiraj, Brigitte Boltz, Paul Rabenold, Bob Gemske, David Reik, and El Presidente
Peter Hawley. And finally, thanks to Will Graustein and his faithful canine
companion Lucy for his excellent timing services. More pictures and complete race
