Cold Cold Night for Coffee O Fivers
by by FTC
It was nine degrees at the start and eight degrees at the finish this
Friday night at the Coffee O Five. It was the coldest night ever in the six
and a half year history of the event. Some of the runners had four or five
layers of clothing under their heavy sweat shirts, one guy had three gloves
on each hand. Even the post race hot cocoa wasnıt all that hot this week.
Coffee O Five regulars, Ed Giordano and John Evans, werenıt cold as
they were en route to the Disney Marathon in Orlando. For Wendy Stafford
and Jack Carroll it was their last cold weather run before heading off to
the Phoenix Half Marathon on Sunday. They finished in a tie for third.
Kathie Fallon and Sharon Grace traded in their running shoes for walking
shoes and teamed up with Kathy Alestra to lead three walkers across the line
in just under 40 minutes.
Ed Sweeney romped home with a time of 34:10 to take second. Bob
Richards finished fourth for the second week in a row. Simon Freeman
cracked the menıs top five for his first time with a time of just under 40
minutes. Mary-Louise Timmermans was the second woman to cross the line and
Carorlyn Bird rounded out the womenıs field.
The Coffee O Five is a weekly five mile run and 2.4 mile walk which is
held every Friday night at 5:30 from Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is
no entry fee for this self-timed event and all runners and walkers are
welcome. Reflective running gear and warm clothes are required through the
