Another Tough Night For the Coffee O Fivers

by by Ken Gartner

What a difference a few hours makes. The roads were nice and dry all day on Friday, but by the time 5:30 rolled around things had frozen over solid and Surf Drive was almost sheer ice. This led to a somewhat treacherous five-mile run for the Coffee-O-Fivers, but all 14 runners made it through unscathed. Five walkers also slid through the elements this week as well. Mike Norton made it three wins in a row as he skated into Town Hall Square in just a shade over 31 minutes to finish in a tie for first. Dana Miskell made his first appearance of 2003 and managed a fourth place finish. His time of 36:10 was two minutes behind Jeff List, who nabbed third. Jack Carrol took fourth with a time of just under 39 minutes. Eileen Miskell garnered her first ever Coffee-O-Five win with a time of 45:50. Her time was good enough to best Sabine Mecking and Mary-Louise Timmermans by one minute. Ms. Timmermans and Ms. Mecking were participating for the first time and were in a quandary as the course directional arrows were all covered with snow and they didnšt know the course. Bob Richards came through in the clutch and escorted the two women through the course without getting lost or falling down. Carolyn Bird took fourth for the women. The Coffee-O-Five is a weekly five mile run and 2.4 mile walk which is held every Friday night at 5:30 from Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is no entry fee for this self timed event and steaming hot cocoa, is generously supplied by Coffee Obsession for all runners and walkers after the event. The next big event on the local running scene is the 26th Annual Seagul Six Road Race which. The 5.74 miler will be held on April 6th in downtown Woods Hole.
