Spring Brings Out Large Coffee O Five Field
by by Ken Gartner
Spring must be hereCoffee Obsession is now supplying ice cold water to the
thirsty Friday night runners, as opposed to steaming hot chocolate. The
warm weather brought out the largest field yet for the year, as 38 runners
and nine walkers participated in this weekıs event.
Dana Miskell again posted the time to beat, as he toured the course
early in 32:37. The time stood up for his second third place finish in the
past three weeks. Greg Stone, a Cape Cod road running veteran from way
back, set the pace early with a strong first mile and held on for second
place. His time of 29:27 was his best five-mile effort in many years for
the injury plagued speedster. Patrick Parker of Oak Bluffs chalked up his
first top five finish, as he trailed Matt Plant to the finish by just 20
seconds. After his fine effort, Mr. Parker dashed off to Woods Hole to
catch the ferry back home. Sixty-five-year-old Mike Mullo didnıt lose very
much speed during his long winter Coffee O Five layoff. He managed a sixth
place finish with his time of 36:22.
Stace Beaulieu was the first of 16 women to cross the line this week. It
was a close race for the next four spots, as the next four women crossed the
line within 30 seconds of one another. Kris Tholke and Katleen Savage
finished together in 40:24, with Liz Waldman and Eileen Miskell finishing
close on their heels to take fourth and fifth.
Linda Dalton returned after a long injury-induced layoff and finished
with a trio of women in just over 50 minutes. Five-month-old Leanna
Girton, cracked 50 minutes for five miles, with perhaps just a little help
from dad. Bob Richards is no fool. He tucked in behind big Dan Webb on
Surf Drive and used him to shield the strong head wind. The result was a
personal best for Mr. Richards who is training in earnest for next monthıs
Boston Marathon.
The Coffee O Five is a weekly five mile run and 2.4 mile walk which is
held every Friday night at 5:30 from Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is
no entry fee for this self-timed event and all runners and walkers are
invited to participate.
