Meager Turnout for First Coffee O of the Year
by by Ken Gartner
There was kind of a meager turnout for the first Coffee O Five of the
year. Only seven hearty soles toed the line this week. With the strong
northeast wind times were generally slow but everyone placed well. Several
Coffee O veterans were able to walk away with their first ever top five
finishes. Don Lunn, the walking man of Waquoit, returned to start a new
walking streak. His six-month streak ended last week due to a family
vacation, which foolishly included a Friday stay-over. Mr. Lunn was the
lone walker and he cruised through the course solo in 40 minutes flat.
Dan Webb battled through the elements in just over 41 minutes to notch
a third place finish and second male over-all. Bob Richards and Brian
McDevitt were third and fourth for the men and for both it was their first
ever finish in the tough top five. Mr. McDevitt was using the run as a
tune-up for a road race in Rhode Island the following morning. Mr. Webb and
Mr. Richards were tuning up for the Weary Travelers Five miler in Bourne the
following Sunday.
Lynn Holmgren picked up some leg speed this fall, as she turned in a
very impressive time of 36 minutes flat, despite the tough conditions. She
finished second over-all. Carolyn Bird was second for the women as she
capped off a busy day of running with a 65 minute effort.
The Coffee O Five is a weekly five-mile road race and 2.4 mile walk
which is held every Friday night at Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is
no entry fee for this self-timed event and all runners and walkers are
invited to participate. Reflective clothing is required through the winter
months.
