Coffee-O-Five
Falmouth, MA, January 31, 2003
Winter Thaw for Coffee O Fivers
by by Ken Gartner
It was a balmy 38 degrees this Friday and to the Coffee-O-Five runners and
walkers it felt like a heat wave. This week the runners were able to run in
just one sweatshirt, instead of two or three, and one set of light gloves
sufficed to keep their hands warm, instead of two per hand. People actually
stayed around this week to talk and swill the hot cocoa supplied by Coffee
Obsession, instead of diving into their cars after crossing the finish and
speeding straight home to their hot showers. Seventeen runners and another
four walkers enjoyed the late January thaw.
Liz Waldman garnered her first Coffee-O-Five win and also out-legged
her husband, Rich, for the first time in quite a while. The 55-year-old
Irish speedster from Mashpee finished in just over 42 minutes. Judi Keller
finished several minutes later to take second for the women. Madeleine
Marken edged Carolyn Bird for third.
Last weekıs winner, Michele Bianchini, settled for third this week in
the menıs race. The native of Venice, Italy finished in 33:35. Jeff List
trotted home in 36:25 to nab fourth and Chris Sherwood of North Falmouth
took fifth in 37:11. For Mr. Sherwood it was his best finish in this
prestigious event.
Leslie Fotiu recruited Pat Vasconcellos to participate in the 2.4 mile
walk and the two women altered the course so they could walk by at least 15
of the neighboring restaurants. They reportedly dashed off to dinner after
the walk. Barbara and Don Lunn also loped through the walk this week.
The Coffee O Five is a weekly five mile run and 2.4 mile walk from Town
Hall Square in Falmouth. The free self-timed event starts at 5:30 every
Friday night and all are welcome to participate.
