On the morning of February 16, 2002 participants of the Winter Wuhoo! Adventure Race
arrived at Snoqualmie Pass and were greeted by a sunny, clear sky. Nearly 100 people lined
up at the start line for a day of snowshoeing, Nordic skiing, trekking, rappelling, and
orienteering.
The race route started off with a fast sprint on snowshoes that turned out to be more
difficult than anticipated as the participants were carrying all their gear except skis.
Racer’s then switched to their Nordic skis and maintained the fast past on flat
groomed ski tracks. The next stop was a 40 foot rappel with a creek at the bottom of the
cliff. Racer’s had to use some fancy footwork so as not to get their feet wet. Soon
it was all uphill and the pace slowed down considerably as the racers wound their way up
Mount Catherine. At Nordic Pass the racer’s strapped on their snowshoes and pulled
out their compasses in an attempt to find three checkpoints hidden in various locations on
Mt. Catherine and then to the finish line located at Hyak.
Exhaustion didn’t stop the smiles and laughter as the racers recounted their
day’s activities at the Hyak Lodge with great enthusiasm while enjoying a catered
dinner. The race awards ceremony started while three teams were still on the course. All
top finishers were awarded a free entry into the 2003 Winter Wuhoo! and a combination of
prizes from the race sponsors: CLIF® BAR, TUBBS SNOWSHOE COMPANY, ISIS SPORTSWEAR,
TALKING RAIN BEVERAGE COMPANY, and ARE YOU NUTS? TRAIL RUNNING.
