A Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix Event
109 finishers in 6K run/walk.
17 finishers in 1K fun run/walk.
Despite one of the warmest mornings and hottest days of the year, a huge number of race records were broken Saturday morning at the second annual New Quarter Park 6K Run in Williamsburg, a Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix event.
Running performance is negatively affected by heat and humidity, but you wouldn't know that by the race times at New Quarter Park. Michael Mann, 33, of Hampton broke the overall course record with his 19:54, bettering the 20:26 last year by Andre Smith of Hayes, the CRR Grand Prix champion for 2001. The top three race walkers were under last year's winning time of 38:38, with Tom Gerhardt, 51, of Chesapeake setting the new mark with his 38:07. In addition 10 of the 13 men's age group records were broken.
The women's records were not as prevalent, but race winner Jennifer Quarles, 30, of Williamsburg won in 25:07, one of four women's age group marks.
The official weather records (at Norfolk) for Saturday had a morning low of 79 degrees, and a high of 97 degrees, tying the day's record high from 1968. In Williamsburg the morning low was slightly lower, 77 degrees, but by the 9 a.m. starting time, the temperatures was at least in the mid-80s, rising fast, and with bright sun and very sticky humidity.
Fortunately, the New Quarter Park 6K is run on a scenic course that is mostly shaded. It starts with an out-and-back portion on the park entrance road going towards Queens Lake (about 1 1/2 miles on asphalt), then traverses fields and woods on a park fire trail down to the York River and back. A half-mile long hill back from the York River makes for much slower times than on a standard road course.
Mann overcame the heat, humidity and hills to break the 20-minute barrier, and finish a quarter mile ahead of Jim Bates, 46, of Hampton (21:16) and Daniel Shaye, 33, of Williamsburg (21:28). Keith Schumann, 32, of Williamsburg, who challenged Mann early, faded to a fourth-place 21:55.
Fifth place for the men (in 22:31) was Ned Berg, 43, of Lee Hall, who was running in his 50th consecutive CRR Grand Prix race, a Cal Ripken-esque performance.
With his win Mann took a commanding lead in the 2002 CRR Grand Prix standings. After seven of 11 races, the top six are Mann (47 points), Bates (37), Andre Smith (34), Schumann (28), Shaye (28) and Berg (27). Defending champion Smith ran the first four races this year, but has missed the last three.
The top three for the women in the 6K were much closer than the men's top three, with Quarles (25:07) pulling away from Sherry Volk, 41, of Williamsburg (25:34) and Valerie Plyler, 42, of Newport News (25:38). In the CRR women's Grand Prix Volk (59 points) has a substantial lead over Quarles (42) and Carol Talley (28). Talley, 47, of Toano was fourth Saturday in 26:59.
Besides Mann's overall record and Gerhardt's walk record, 10 of the 13 men's age group records were broken, including Anthony Mann (14-and-under, 31:07), Gavin McCandlish (15-19, 29:47), Peter Harris (20-24, 22:34), Michael Mann (30-34, 19:54), Rob Vance (35-39, 24:39), Ned Berg (40-44, 22:31), Jim Bates (45-49, 21:16), Robert Wilson (55-59, 25:06), Tom Ray (65-69, 27:19) and Andrew Polansky (70-and-over, 34:51). The only men's records that remained the same were for the 25-29 (Andre Smith), 50-54 (Rick Platt) and 60-64 (Winston Collins) categories.
The four women's age group records that were broken were by Jennifer Quarles (30-34, 25:07), Sherry Volk (40-44, 25:34), Joan Coven (60-64, 29:03) and Nancy Patron (65-and-over, 34:57). Alison Holinka, who has since moved to Colorado, has the women's overall record of 22:00. She was second overall last year, with only men's winner Andre Smith faster.
The New Quarter Park 6K race was organized this year for the first time by the York County Division of Children's Services, directed by Belinda Willis and intern Amia Barrows. The Griffin-Yeates Learning Center, a program of the Division of Children's Services, operates a number of initiatives designed to foster early childhood development and family self-sufficiency. Their mission is to develop partnerships that promote quality opportunities for children's educational readiness, at all levels of ability, and to foster success for families and staff. The staff had also organized the popular Queens Lake 5K in April, also at New Quarter Park, but on a road course.
The next CRR race is the 5K Hospice Run at Ford's Colony on Sept. 14. The CRR weekly interval workouts continue every Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Barksdale Field, and are open to all. For information contact Rick Platt (229-7375).
