Run The Woodlands 5K #64

The Woodlands, TX, August 24, 2002

Results courtesy of the Run The Woodlands 5K Series.

A Birthday Win and Smoothie King

Tom McDonough of The Woodlands came to the race with one goal in mind. The West Point graduate and former US Army Ranger wanted to become the first runner to win an RTW 5K on his birthday. It didn't come easily, but he succeeeded in attaining the goal. McDonough had to hold off a final, all-out kick by Jeff Cochran of Kingwood to eke out a photo-finish win. In what was the closest ever RTW finish, both runners were clocked in 17:46.

First-time RTW entrant Grace Albright of The Woodlands was the first overall female and the first female master.

A year ago, the last race in August drew a record 90 finishers, with the bulk of them being high school runners getting ready for the fall cross-country season. That same race was also marked by the appearance of the now legendary Meow Mix Mobile. There were no high schoolers in attendance this year with the result that the total number of finishers was a disappointing twenty-six. In addition, the Meow Mix Mobile didn't re-materialize. However, the race was paid a visit by Smoothie King. In addition to the usual post-race water and soda, those in attendance were treated to post-race Smoothies. We have been promised that Smoothie King will be back for the September 28th race.

For the first time, a race walker completed an RTW 5K. Paul Walker of The Woodlands now holds the racewalk CR of 33:13.

Of the 26 finishers, only one was under the age of 30. Not only at the RTW 5K's, but in races around the country, runners in the 20-29 category are a disappearing entity.

Where are the photos? Hopefully, they'll be posted by Monday. As the photos were being downloaded from the digital camera to the computer preparatory to being posted, the results board toppled onto the camera and damaged the camera-to-computer cable. The result? No photos. A replacement cable should be had by Monday. Sorry!

Conditions: clear; high 70's at the start; moderately high humidity; calm.

The next race in the series is scheduled for Saturday, September 14th. Please note that because there are five Saturdays in August, there is a three-week gap before the next series run. The entry fee remains $1.00 (yes, one dollar).
