History Repeats Itself at Huston-Tillotson College 5K
(AUSTIN, Texas) —Mike Franko crossed the finish line first in 2002 Huston-Tillotson College 5K Fun Run and Walk held Saturday, April 6. Arbina Gallyamova captured first place honors for the second consecutive year in the women’s division of the fourth annual event that was delayed when a brief Texas storm ranging from a light sprinkle to a thunderous downpour passed over.
Franko finished the course in a time of 15:41, followed by James Menze with his second place time of 16:01. Gallyamova finished with a time of 18:29.
The event, brought back a few years ago after an 11-year lapse, is a thank you and continuous celebration of the College’s history, which is marked this year by a special milestone—the 50th year anniversary of the 1952 merger of Samuel Huston and Tillotson colleges into what is now known as Huston-Tillotson College. Samuel Huston dates back to 1875 and Tillotson College 1876.
Walkers: Timothy Doss finished first overall (30:54), Sewah Archer was the first place female walker with a time of 45:56, and Robert Walker captured first in the masters male division (34:09), also for the second consecutive year. Youths Karl Gronberg, Jr. and Madelyn Cropper finished first in the 9-12 divisions with times of 23:06 and 32:16, respectively.
