Race Report/Age Group Results

The 16th Annual Spearfish Canyon Half Marathon and 5k Walk was held on Saturday, August 3, 2002. The half marathon and 5k walk is a popular annual event for runners who look forward to the early morning downhill race. A total of 131 runners and 36 walkers competed in this year's event.

The top three finishers in each age group for men and women were presented with medals. The top three men and women overall were as follows:

Awards were also presented to the runner who has participated in this event since its inception, Mike Herdina from Rapid City, SD. The two runners who traveled the furthest distance also received prizes: Jack Frandsen, Morristown AZ and Umesh Thakkar, Urbana, IL.

The Northern Hills Area CASA Program was the sponsor of the fundraiser and the proceeds will be used to train and support volunteer advocates. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) volunteers are trained to research and present to the court the needs of abused or neglected children they represent. The Northern Hills Area CASA Program is located in Deadwood and serves children in Meade, Lawrence, Butte and Perkins counties.
