"4th Annual International Broadway at the Beach 5K Run"

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina - 4/20/2002

The race was held under clear skies, with a starting temperature of 76 degrees, with a slight breeze. 249 runners and walkers completed the unique route that circles the Broadway at the Beach entertainment complex, then turns inside the venue for the final scenic mile, that includes 3 wooden bridges over Lake Broadway, before finishing in front of the Hard Rock Cafe and Celebrity Square.

On the Men's side, 46 year old masters sensation Dave Renneisen, of Goose Creek, S.C. took control of the race just after the half mile, blistering the first mile in 5:06, and continuing the fast pace through 2 miles in 10:12. He would then hold his position as race leader over the final mile and go on to win in a very strong winning time of 16:21, and 5:15 per mile. Thomas Palmer of Charleston, S.C. would also run a strong race, finishing only 13 ticks back in 16:34 for runner-up honors. B. Lee Hurren of Florence, S.C. would run a very good 17:10 to take the third place honors. In the Men's Masters race, 50 year old local standout Danny West of Myrtle Beach scorched the 5K route in 17:40 to win. Guy Robson of Fairport, N.Y. would take the runner-up honors for the Masters in an outstanding time of 18:02.

On the Women's side, Terri Bradley of Fayetteville, N.C. ran all alone chasing the course record on a warm and humid morning. She would run an outstanding time of 18:46, 6:02 per mile pace. Teenager Katelyn Reepmeyer of Cohoes, NY ran a very strong effort finishing second in a very solid time of 20:52. Masters sensation Mary McGowan of Wilmington, N.C. would take third place overall honors in a very good time of 21:05. In the Women's Masters race, Diane Hastell of Wilmington, N.C. would take the overall masters race in a good time of 22:32. Not far behind was second overall female masters Donna Butler of Merrimac, MA. with a solid time of 23:21.
