PRESS RELEASE
2002 Run for the Red Cross
Honesdale PA
18431: Two
hundred runners and fifty volunteers turned out on a beautiful Saturday, June
8th morning for the fourth Annual Wayne Pike Chapter’s Run for the Red Cross.
The event consisting of a scenic, 10K and 5K run around Promised Land Lake at
the State Park. The chapter raised over $8000 from the event to support the
programs of the local chapter. Race Director Coulby Dunn stated, “The proceeds
from this event will stay within our community to support the vital work of our
Red Cross. The Red Cross is always there to provide disaster assistance, blood
products, first aid, CPR and lifesaving training, and to assist military
personnel and their families. We are not a government agency and receive no
outside funding so it is events such as this that help financially support the
important work that we do. This year has been difficult for our Red Cross
chapter, besides helping many local families that were affected by the events
of September 11th, we have also experienced many local single family
fires with families that have needed our assistance with food, shelter,
clothing and personal items.”
All pre-registered racers received participation
packets, which included tee shirts, sponsored by Gumble Brothers, Caesars Cove
Haven and Banner Insurance Co. and First Aid Kits, donated by Altec Lansing.
The fifty volunteers that were on hand to help were
lead by the Board of Directors of the Wayne Pike Chapter. Groups that helped at
the race were the Promised Land Fire and Ambulance Association, the National
Park Service, NEPARS and RACES Radio groups, the Junior Firefighters from
Hemlock Farms and Red Cross volunteers from the community.
The American Red Cross is dedicated to helping make
families and communities safer at home and around the world. A volunteer-led
humanitarian service organization, the American Red Cross annually provides
almost half the nation's blood supply, trains more than 11.7 million people in
vital lifesaving skills, mobilizes relief to victims of more than 60,000
disasters nationwide, provides direct health services to 2.8 million people,
assists international disaster and conflict victims in nearly 30 countries, and
transmits more than 1.4 million emergency messages to members of the U.S Armed
Forces and their families.
