87 runners and walkers turned out for the annual Catherine Creek Classic Run and
Walk Saturday in Union. The event was a fundraiser for the Union High School
Cross Country team.
Besides the local participants, there were participants from New Mexico, Utah,
Idaho, as well as from across Oregon. The oldest participant was 81-year-old
John Brown of Baker City. The youngest was 5-year-old Amanda Welch of La Grande.
The closest race of the day turned out to be the 1 Mile run, which came down to
the last 5 yards, where 13 year old Bryan Hesse nipped 10 year old Tom Sheehy at
the finish. Both runners are from Union. Genny Bowen won the women's 1 Mile race.
The 5K races saw some stiff competition on the men's and women's side. Eric
Griffiths of La Grande cruised to victory on the men's side, with Tausha Kuzmic of
Nampa, Idaho winning the women's race.
In the men's Half Marathon, the top 5 were all recorded extremely fast times.
The race was won by Greg Contreras of Ontario, with the top 5 all coming in under
1:20. (One hour, 20 minutes). That's a pace of close to 6 minute per mile for
13.1 miles. These guys were cooking!! Laura Ruhland of Pendleton won the women's
Half Marathon.
