Lake McMurtry Trail Runs - 50K/25K

Muddy 50K Winner: Phil Sheridan

Dear Ultrarunners,

A cold, wet edition of the Lake McMurtry Trail Run has come and gone. Despite the thunderstorms and rain we had 58 starters and 51 finishers at this, the 4th edition of the LMTR. Most of the runners were in the 25 km but a few brave few managed to finish the 50 km.

The trails were in great shape Friday with temperatures reaching 80 F. On Saturday heavy rain began falling 30 minutes before the race start time and kept up for 6 hours. The trail was very muddy as were most of the runners. Temperatures were cool, in the 50's, and the wind was strong. Several runners finished suffering from hypothermia. Half of the 50 km field dropped, most due to cold and mud.

In the 50 km Phil Sheridan won again, running only 23 minutes slower than his course Masters record of 4:09:33. He took both the open and masters' awards. In the 25 km race Jeff Nowlin won in 2:09:52, about 20 minutes off record pace. He also took the open and masters' awards. Jennifer Hopper of Norman won the women's' open 25 km race again, running about 20 minutes slower than 2001. Eva Armstrong won the women's' masters 25 km race in 3:43:25.

The hot food was appreciated at the end of the race. Jambalaya, hamburgers, barley and mushroom soup were provided at the barbecue. We had to throw a lot of ice away this year. Next year we'll have hot chocolate and coffee just in case. As the last 50 km runners came in the sun came out and things warmed up. A high temperature in the mid 70's was recorded. On Sunday the temperature went up to 86 F. Weather is pretty unpredictable in Oklahoma especially in April.

Next years race will be held at the same time, two weeks before the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon.
