Molly Huddle 9:31.97 US#1
Elmira, NY senior Molly Huddle continues to use open races to attack the DyeStat Elite national high school rankings. At the Dick's Sporting Goods/National Bank of Geneva Upstate Indoor Distance Festival Sunday 2/24 at Hobart and William Smith College, Geneva NY, Huddle ran 3000 meters in 9:31.97 for a US season best by 24 seconds. She also heads the 2-Mile list (10:19.8), the 1500m list (4:22.3) and is 3rd in the mile.
The Notre Dame-bound Huddle's 3000m was a new meet record. She came back less than an hour later to win the women's mile, also in a new meet record of 4:59.9.
Other winners in the meet included the Genesee Valley Harriers's Karen Elliot (new 800m Meet record: 2:18.81), Matt Blodgett (1:58.70 for 800m) and Dave Bradshaw (8:59.58 for 3000m).
Checkers AC Jeff Greundike won the mile in 4:29.83. Herb Engman of Ithaca's High Noon AC won the Veteran Men's Mile in 5:26.91.
The Roger Messenger Memorial Masters Mile was won by Toronto's Gordon Christie, a former All-Eastern collegiate performer at Princeton in the early 80's. He surged with 3 laps to go to distance himself from the lead pack of five. Stuart Galloway of the Niagara Olympic Club was 2nd for the second consecutive year while Syracuse Charger Mike Platt nipped Ithaca's Casey Carlstrom at the line for third. GVH's Tim Mullen was fifth. Christie's victory was worth $200.00.
Canisius College, led by Pat Leone (4:21.81) set a new 4 x 1600 meter meet record of 17:51.79, eclipsing the 17:56.0 mark set by the Syracuse Chargers in 2000. Rick Streeter (4:29.73), Matt Reilly (4:35.98) and Pat Leone (4:24.90) rounded out the Golden Griffin squad.
