Creel, McGoff win Bridger Ridge Run

Without a cloud in the sky Saturday, Bozeman's Scott Creel set out to break his own record time at the 2002 Bridger Ridge Run.

He didn't disappoint.

The 40-year old finished with a new course record of 3 hours, 10 minutes, 19 seconds, breaking his old record by over four minutes (3:14.30).

"It was diabolical," Creel said of the final three minute stretch. The path Creel spoke of is referred to as the steep way down from the "M."

The run consists of 20 miles over the Bridger Mountain ridge with a great deal of up-and-down running throughout.

"I was hoping I would get under 3:10 if everything went well — I guess it did," Creel said.

Creel attributed his quicker start to the cut back in his overall time. He said he finished the last hour of the run at the same speed as last year.

"When I reached the cross pass I think I was about five minutes faster," he said. "I just missed (the record) last year so I was sure to synchronize my watch this time around."

Creel finished with a time of 3:15:44 last year. This victory marks the fourth time Creel has entered the Ridge Run, and the fourth time he has captured first place overall.

What might be most impressive about Creel is not how many races he wins but by the margin of victory. Jonathan Wirth of Belgrade came in second in his first Ridge Run at 3:46:08.

"I am satisfied with my time, but being an athlete there is always room for improvement," Wirth said. "This was my first time; it's the race everyone around here talks about so I thought I should check it out."

Liz McGoff became the first woman to cross the finish line with a time of 4:22:37. It was McGoff's fourth Ridge Run.

"It was a good day," she said. "Some days the stars are just aligned the right way. I ran the runnables and power hiked the rough parts."

McGoff has raced in Idaho and Utah but enjoys running the Bridger race more calling it the "the most beautiful race in the western states."

She had finished with a time of 4:41:28 last year and improvement of almost 19 minutes.

"I didn't push myself as hard at the beginning; there were three women ahead of me at Sacajawea (Peak)," McGoff said. She believed her pace allowed her to finish with a personal best time.

Much of running such a long, treacherous course like the Bridger Run is "just getting a feel for it" according to Wirth.

If that's the case Creel could do the race in his sleep.
