Eleventh Annual Cobscook Bay 10K for Down East Hospice

The Eleventh Annual Cobscook Bay 10K/5K was held in Pembroke on Sunday, 2 June 2002. Despite intermittent showers, the race attracted a near record number of participants.

Triathlete Bob Hepler held off  past 10K winner Jeremy Lisee (1996–2000) for a second year in a row, finishing with an impressive time of 34:19, a scant five seconds short of the course record. Heppler race was made more notable by turning in an excellent time after having biked 30-plus miles to the start from Machias—as final training session for an upcoming triathalon in Maryland. Sue Foster, a master’s runner, won the overall women’s 10K with a time of 41:01, ahead of Kathleen Bell (41:50) and Katrina Bisheimer (45:25). Our youngest 10K participant, thirteen-year-old Amanda Williams, posted a 59:06 in the 10K.

In the 5K race, Andrew Roussel of Calais lead the men with a 19:24; Yvonne Hayward was the first woman finisher in 23:18. Angela Fochesato was the first 5K walker with a fast record time of 38:24.

For the first time in the eleven years of the Cobscook Bay 10K, the number of participants in the 10K exceeded that of the 5K (80 to 48). The skies cleared for the post-race salmon cookout and barbeque, and the awards ceremony followed. As in past years, the event was an enormous success for Down East Hospice, a nonprofit organization that provides free care and support for the terminally ill, the grieving, and their families throughout Washington County, Maine.

The race directors wish to thank the Hospice volunteers, members of the community, and all the participants who helped make this year’s event a resounding success.
