Blackstone and Prest win Island Falls 5k

On Saturday, August 3rd, sixteen-year-old Chris Blackstone of Caribou went out fast and never looked back as he took the Island Falls Summerfest 5k road/cross country race. The sunny, hot, muggy morning kept times a little slower than usual, as the #2 time by Larry Hodge of Middletown, CT was over 2 minutes behind Chris, at 19:54. Finishing third overall was 15-year-old Andrew Ciszewski of Caribou.
On the female side of things, Frances Prest of Presque Isle took first by 1:31 over Linda Mountain of Mapleton. Their times were 22:19 and 22:50 respectively. Sandy Newman of Danvers, MA took third female overall at 24:36.

In the half mile age 7 and under race, Loren Hodge of Middletown, CT was first in 4:18, Parker Walker of Island Falls second in 5:17 and Colby Donovan of Island Falls third in 6:46.
Last year our largest turnout in the nine-year history of the race was reached at 77. This year was our smallest ever at only 41. Next year on our 10th anniversary our goal is 100+, as we’ll again have T-shirts and nearly $1000.00 in door prizes! Plus, as always, the delicious made pies for all winners (or fudge, cookies or brownies if the wish).

Many thanks to the many businesses that contributed gifts for door prizes, namely: Christianmints.com, Katahdin Federal Credit Union, Bishop’s Market, Porter’s Garage, Kathy’s Restaurant, Jerry’s Thriftway, Town and Country of Houlton, Maine-Lee Promotions, Season’s Grille at Va-Jo-Wa, the Va-Jo-Wa Golf Course, Daigle Oil Co., The Pepsi Cola Bottling Co. of Presque Isle and World Wide Vacations.

Huge thanks to the many folks who again volunteered to do pies, cookies, fudge and brownies as “trophies” for the winners. An auction was held after the race with the remaining goodies up for bid. Hundreds of dollars were raised for Teen Outreach Project. Thanks to all those who baked and bidded.
