Coffee Obsession Friday Night 5

Falmouth, MA, July 12, 2002

Another Large Field at the Friday Night 5

Fifty-six runners and a dozen walkers showed up for the pre Bastille Day running of the Coffee-O-Five. It was ten degrees cooler than it was last week and most of the runners finished at least a minute faster than they did a week ago.

Brian Nelson led the field this week as he bettered his five mile personal best time by over 30 seconds. He unleashed a potent finishing kick and stormed across the line in just a few ticks over 30 minutes. In past years Mr. Nelson would occasionally slow to a walk over the last mile down Walker Street. This week he unleashed a 5:40 finishing mile, which was his fastest mile of the night. He finished so fast he even left his old bald-headed pace setter in the dust as he crossed the line. Chris George also had a good night as he finished in third with a time of 31:06, his fastest time in the last couple of years. Jeff List edged Dave Stuebe for fourth.

Nancy Correia cracked 35 minutes for her first time since last year. She garnered a Coffee-O-Five win and a top ten over-all finish. Gina Reppucci took second in 36:28, which was her best time and highest finish ever. Kathleen Savage took third and Jamie George edged Susan Beale for fourth.

Bob Richards clocked another personal best time as he finished in 39:39. Norm Wainwright returned after a long stint on the “injured reserve list.” Two of Cape Cod’s fastest 65-year-old men toed the line this week. Mike Mullo and John Hurley, two old time veterans, both toured the course in just over seven minute per mile pace to place in the top third of the field.

The Coffee-O-Five is a weekly five mile road race which is held at Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is no entry fee for the event and all runners are invited to participate. Ice cold bottled water is generously supplied to the runners by the Coffee Obsession coffee shop. A 2.4 mile noncompetitive walk is also held for those not so fleet of foot.
