Monsoon for Pre Christmas Coffee O

by by Ken Gartner

The Friday night runners have had it pretty rough the last two months. This week it was a balmy 50 degrees for the pre Christmas Coffee-O-Five and that was the only good news. It was pouring rain and the wind was whipping straight from the south at close to 50 miles per hour. Things were great if you were running north, but unfortunately the course runs due south for two of the five miles. The runners got pelted with stinging rain, blown almost backwards by the wind on Elm Road, and almost blown into Oyster Pond on Surf Drive. Just eleven loony runners showed up this week along with three walkers. Don Lunn, the walking man of Waquoit, slogged through the elements and still hasnšt missed the weekly walk in over six months. The times were very slow this week and no one stuck around to swill refreshments or to tell running war stories afterwards. Instead they all signed in and drove straight home to warm showers and dry clothes. Unfortunately a ferocious wind gust sent the official results sheet airborne and out to the middle of Cape Cod Bay. Since it was almost Christmas anyway, a friendly 12-way tie was declared and everyone was given a time of 40 minutes flat. The Coffee O Five is a weekly five-mile run and 2.4 mile walk which starts and finishes at Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is no entry fee and all runners and walkers are invited to participate. Post race hot cocoa and water, are generously supplied by Coffee Obsession. Reflective clothing is required through the winter.
