Michael Collins "Race For Freedom" 2.6 & 5.2 Milers
Cambridge, MA, August 22, 2002
Results
Hosted by the Somerville Striders Athletic Club
A load of micks in-house tonight...a few real lives ones, many 1st, 2nd
and 3rd generation types, a couple of wanna bees, one who met Mick Collins #1
nemesis Eamon de Valera in Dublin and even a German-American who just rubbed
up against the Irish-American race director post race for a few fleeting
seconds and then ran off...the RD's not a rabbitts foot so no special luck
came from it..however the RD has been known to pull a rabbit or two out of
his race directors cap from time to time..
The men's returnin' champeen from 2001, Finbar Kirwan of Cork joined us
again in 2002 with his lovely wife Annabelle...but he forgot to rub up
against the RD for luck before the race and this year he took home the 2nd
prize in the 2.6 miler behind a speedy Italian-American from Chicago,
Illinois named Mike Ciccarelli...the Irish and the Italians have always loved
one another...so there was a some post race back slapping between the
two...and perhaps Mike will come back next week and give Finbar a rematch at
the Harpoon Brewery Charles River Ramble Reggae Run...all the Somerville $$$
action is on Finbar--
A special guest was in-house tonight, visually impaired runner Joe
Quintanilla of the Massachusetts Association for the Blind..Joe ran with a
guide tonight and then spent the evening rallying the evening attendees about
his upcoming road race on the Charles River..the Oct. 5th-Team with a Vision
5Km..a 2002 can't miss event!!
So many stories to tell from the Naked City tonight but I will leave you
with the above..see ya next week--our last one of the 2002 summer season:>)
