Nora, Nora, Nora
Nora Hulton ran the first ten races of the 2002 season, but since then, except for two races in August, she's been mostly missing in action. She chose a wet week to return, but, in the wind-driven rains of the remains of Hurricane Kyle, she ran to her first victory of the season, nipping Roxbury's Marla Truini by two places. Welcome back, Nora.
Meanwhile, Mike Abraham continues to get faster, winning now for seven weeks in a row. Such a run of victories hasn't been seen since Mark Chantry won more than 20 weeks in a row, spread over two seasons back in the late 1980's.
Abe was eleven seconds faster this week than he had been on the same course and under more congenial conditions last week. Bob Derringer tried to stay with Abe for a while, but the pace was just too fast. Bob didn't last to the end of Apple Lane. New dad JT Schemm made it clear to South Street, but he, got toasted a few yards later, and Abe's lead grew like corn in July.
Today's bad weather made a bit of chaos at the finish line. Ken Merrick bobbled his stopwatch, and got times for everyone who finished after him, but not for himself. Nobody got JT Schemm's time.
The crummy weather probably cut in to today's crowd a little bit today, but several regulars had a longer excuse; they were running the Hartford Marathon. We will be validating their excuses next week when we get the Hartford results.
Walt Schuttler and Carl Hunt are excused from last week's race. They were in Detroit, running the Detroit Marathon. Adding Michigan to his list of Marathon States gives Walt 18 states now. Carl "only" has nine states, but he has a juicy new PR in the marathon to console him, a 3:44, more than 15 minutes faster than his previous best.
Our upper picture is Gregg Scribner, who now has over a thousand points in the prestigious Roxbury Points System. To the left is Al Mletzko being pursued by his shadow.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet on CoolRunning.com and on HiTekRacing.com AND on runningintheusa.com. All the great sites link to RoxburyRaces.com!
