Pete M Clobbers Abe
Kyle Returns to Podium
As we wrote of last week's
race, it's a big deal to beat the coach if you run for New Milford High School. Last week, Nate Beatty came up short when he
tried. This week, Pete Matthiessen took a crack at it. Odds were
against him. He was a little tired from a big performance at the conference
championships, where he placed in two events, and this was a 4.5 mile
race. Usually, the more mature runners have an advantage as the
race gets longer. Add to that, Pete went out like a wild man, building a
solid lead in the first mile and extending it in the second.
It looked like a perfect
set-up for a big fade by the Kid and a spectacular comeback by the Old
Coach.
It didn't quite work
that way. Indeed, Pete was "visited by Mr. Bear" as we used to say, and
Abe set his jaw and bravely attempted a come-back, but Pete held on to win by
just about a minute. That's quite an elite group you've joined there,
Pete, of NMHS runners who beat the Coach at Roxbury before they graduate.
And you did it with a year to spare.
Among
the women, Kyle Gancher continued her dramatic comeback from her ailments
earlier this spring and beat both Middlebury cross country star Joan Murphy and
last week's winner Peg Molina to take her first Roxbury since Race #1 of the
season. She was even faster then, about 20 seconds a mile faster, though
on a shorter course. Congratulations on the amazing recovery, and keep it
up.
After
the race, a snapping turtle was seen lurking around the finish line.
Unfortunately, we had stopped all the watches, so we didn't get an official
time.
Today's
pictures are
this week's winners. Mike Abraham and Kyle Gancher.
The
Roxbury Races are now listed on the
Internet both on CoolRunning.com and on HiTekRacing.com.
