Race Conditions: Sunny, breezy and chilly, 40 degrees. Thick grass with spots of soft mud.
Race in review: A starting field of 69 runners toed the line for two circuits of the two-kilometer grassy loop. Leading at the one mile mark (4:24) was Anthony Famigietti, Brad Hauser close behind. At the end of the first 2-kilometer loop (5:34), it was a pack consisting of Hauser, Famigietti, Tim Broe, Dan Browne and Kyle Baker, with many more close behind. Broe proved superior with a strong finish, followed by Hauser and Browne.
Notes ‘N’ Quotes: Broe wins his first U.S. Cross Country title after winning the 2000 NCAA 3000m steeplechase championship, and placing 4th in that event at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Sacramento last year. The Illinois state high school cross country champ in 1993 and 1994, Broe ended the 2000 season ranked 4th nationally in the steeple by Track & Field News. Broe placed 3rd at the 1999 NCAAs in the 5000 meters as a senior at Alabama.
Quotes: "I’ve had a little bit of tendonitis in my left foot, but it did not hinder my running today…I wanted to get out fast, and stay with the leaders as long as I can and let it rip in the last 1000 meters. I’m training about 70-75 miles per week right now…I’m going to move to Michigan to work with Ron Warhurst, the coach at the University of Michigan. I’m not a run-aholic, and I’m the type of person that needs someone to give me direction and a reason to be out here. I’ve been running pretty much on my own since the Trials."
Brad Hauser, Nike, 2nd Place: "The 4K was something new for me this year, but Coach and I decided that if I wanted to run a faster 10K, I needed to run a faster 5K and this helps goal. I wasn’t surprised by the guys up there – I thought it would be a mix of 4-5 guys – but I knew Broe was capable of it, he did it to many a few weeks ago in Boston. I’m thinking about doubling back tomorrow, but I haven’t talked to Coach yesterday. I feel the 12K field is great, but at the same time I’d rather run against a strong field and see where I’m at. The off-season since the Olympics has been great and I’m looking forward to having a shorter racing season this year without the collegiate season. I was a little burned out at the end of last year."

Race Conditions: Sunny, breezy and chilly, 40 degrees. Thick grass with spots of soft mud.
Race in review: A field of 79 started this race. The weather remained windy, and now was cloudy in contrast to sun for earlier races. The first 2k loop (5:06), saw Deena Drossin at the head of a pack including Kris Ihle-Helledy, Jen Rhines, Annette Peters, Kristin Chisum and Clare Taylor. As the race developed, this lead group essentially remained, but became strung out. The second 2k loop (6:31), saw Drossin in front by 5 seconds over Rhines and Ihle-Helledy. The third 2k loop (6:33), saw Drossin over Rhines by 22 seconds, with Peters and Chisum together, seven seconds behind Rhines. Up the final hill, Chisum surged ahead of Peters to complete the top four spots.
Notes ‘N’ Quotes: In winning her fourth career long course national title, Deena Drossin is now third on the all-time list, trailing just Doris Brown (5 championships) and three-time world cross country champ Lynn Jennings, who owns an amazing 9 U.S. Cross Country titles. Drossin also won the 4k title at last year’s USA Winter Nationals in Greensboro, becoming the only woman in history to win the short and long course titles at the same event since the short course race was added in 1999. Drossin, who battled a nagging Achilles injury after the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, ended the 2000 season ranked #1 in the U.S. at 10,000 meters by Track & Field News after setting the new Olympic Trials record of 31:51.05 in July. She also placed 2nd in the 5,000 meters at the 2000 Trials, ending the year ranked #2 nationally in that event. Drossin ended her highly successful 2000 season ranked #4 in the U.S. at 3,000 meters. She finished 11th in the 10,000 meters at the 1999 IAAF World Championships in Seville, Spain, and ended the year ranked #1 nationally in that event by T&FN.

Deena Drossin, Asics, winner: "I’m happy…today, I was running for a lot of people, including my mother (Helena), who has been battling breast cancer…the whole past two months, I was starting from scratch (after battling an Achilles problem during the Olympics). My mother was my strength over the last few months. This was the beginning of a new four-year cycle. I started running on December 1st, going 10 minutes, with therapy before and after my run. I don’t feel as strong as I did at this time last year. I wanted to be competitive on the first lap. I wanted to do well for my mother, my sponsor, and my teammates. As of now, I’m not going to run the 4K. If Asics gets another person to fill the team, I’ll run to help the team."
Annette Peters, Fourth Place: "This is my last season at the elite level, so I wanted to be in the position to have to decide whether I would go to World’s. I’m busy being a mother and teaching right now, so I won’t know for a few weeks. It was a nice course, but the hills on the second K were deceiving. I was pleased with how I raced, but would have hoped to have been a little higher, but I wasn’t as strong at the end. But this season I’m in better shape at this point than past seasons, so I’ll be ready for the10K at USA’s in Eugene."
Jen Rhines, Adidas, second place: "My goal was to hang on as long as possible, and make the team. I was going to make a move on the third lap, but Deena moved first. I took three weeks off after the Olympics, but I’m as about the same fitness level as I was last year going into the nationals. This course was easier than last year. The wind was not too bad. I’m entered in the 4K, but I’m done."
Kristin Chisum, Reebok Boston, Third Place: "I was confident coming but didn’t expect to get third. I liked the course – it was challenging enough but you could still get into a rhythm. It’s exciting to be going to World’s. My training’s been on a roll coming into this meet."
