More than 600 runners and walkers turned out for the Diploma Dash 5K Run/Fitness Walk, presented by the UTSA Alumni Association on the campus of the University of Texas at San Antonio. The participants contributed several thousand dollars in scholarships for students and student/athletes, as sponsors had underwritten the costs of the event. Mayor Howard Peak started the race and then joined the runners. Mayor Peak read a proclamation of the City Championship 5K Race from the City Council of San Antonio. UTSA President Ricardo Romo and UTSA Alumni Association President Rene Escobedo presented medals and trophies to the winning runners and corporate teams. The male Open Champion was Ismael Leon, with a time of 15:30. Randy Reina won the Master's Championship with a time of 16:14. UTSA alumna Liza Hunter-Galvan was the female Open Champion; she came in 16th overall (18:02). Vicki Ralph (22:16) was the female Master's Champion. Roger Soler's Sports (Soler is another UTSA alum) won the Corporate Team event.
