Race Report

The race was held under good weather conditions, with a starting temperature of 79 degrees, a slight breeze, and moderate humidity. 215 runners and walkers completed the scenic route that winds through the State Park with views of the Salt Marsh, Fresh Water Lagoons, Live Oak Forests, and the beautiful Atalaya Castle.

On the men’s side, last year's winner, Mike Aiken of Charleston, S.C., was back to defend his title. After having company for the first mile, he surged ahead and never looked back, narrowly missing the course record he set in 2000 by just seven seconds as he would finish in a speedy 15:05. Fred Reinhardt of Arden, N.C. would run a strong performance finishing in the runner-up position with a quick 15:44. Byron Law of Cary, N.C. would finish just another 10 ticks back in a great time of 15:54 rounding out the top 3 overall.

In the men’s master competition, David Renneisen of Goose Creek, S.C. would blister the route finishing 4th Overall and 1st Master with a very strong 15:56 winning time. Runner-up honors would go to Billy Tisdale of Sumter, S.C. with a very good effort and finishing time of 17:58.

On the women’s side, Terri Bradley of Fayetteville, N.C. would highlight the day setting a new women’s course record. She blazed the route and shattered the old course record by 29 seconds, finishing behind only eleven men, in 12th overall with a new course record of 18:16. Runner-up honors went to local standout Leslie Thompson of Conway, S.C. running a very strong time of 19:42. Third place women’s overall would go to another local, Tara Gurry of N. Myrtle Beach, who also ran a very strong performance with a time of 19:56.

For the women’s master competition, Mary McGowan of Wilmington, N.C., who was battling for a top 3 overall position, would fall just shy, finishing 4th overall and 1st master with an excellent time of 20:03. Runner-up master was Pat King of Garden City, S.C. from the female 50-54 age category. She too ran wonderfully with a time of 22:17.
