Under sunny blue skies and on a day perfect for distance running, 82 hardy souls gathered at the Captain Isaac Paine Elementary School to take on the toughest road race in New England. Without the blistering race day heat and temperatures climbing into the low 90's that runners in last year's inaugural Sherwood 30K had to contend with, Kenneth Carabba, 32, had no trouble shattering the course record of 1:58:01 set by Thad Reichley in 2000. Kenneth hit the finish line in 1:52:30. 2nd place finisher Chris Lawrence, 37, was 51 seconds off last year's winning time, finishing in 1:58:53. Top female honors this year go to Michelle Patuto, 28, with a winning time of 2:25:54. Kim Goff's 2000 course record of 2:14:23 will stand for at least another year.
Joe Banas, 44, was 4th overall and 1st male master with a time of 2:03:18. Nancy Jacovina, 45, was first female master and hit the line just three seconds behind Michelle in 2:25:57. The oldest competitor was Craig Mulligan, who finished up the race in fine form in a time of 3:05:21. Our youngest runner was Sarah Sheppard, just 16, who crossed the line together with Norman Sheppard in 2:51:42.
